When one thinks of slavery, images of a pre-Civil War America most often come to mind. It is interesting that slavery is often associated as an Early American societal component, when it has existed for thousands of years. Yet, America did become the largest market for slave traders. The question then becomes, why did America emerge as the leading market for slaves, and did slavery exist in Africa prior to European and Euro-American involvement?
